Meet the M. Family. It took almost the whole session for J. to warm up to me a bit but once he figured out that he could splash me while we hung out by the water counting ducks, he was game! It was certainly the first time I left the Public Garden having to cover my behind with my camera bag because my shorts were wet from wading in the water and being splashed! The L family and their new addition | jill serrano photography | boston family photographer

This family was just made for lifestyle sessions. They are so incredibly fun and relaxed in front of the camera, I feel like I have known them forever, like I just popped in to say ‘Hi!” on this particular Saturday morning and just happened to have my camera with me to play. We first met in Boston where we spent a good 3-4 hours just wandering around the city. It is one of my favorite sessions still. Lots happened since we last saw each other – they moved to a beautiful home in the ‘burbs and welcomed a new little one to the family. Meet Owen. Alert, awake, and taking in all that is his new family and, in particular, his new sister Maya, who definitely stole the show and in so many ways, my heart. I just love her. Meet Colby. Normally a pretty happy baby, except when I am around, apparently :) Poor guy decided that changing his nap schedule would be a good idea right around the time we had planned our session for. Our first attempt was rescheduled because instead of napping when he should have been, he decided to enjoy a nice walk in the city with Dad and was ready to sleep upon my arrival. Same goes for our second attempt. This time he actually did sleep so we went for a nice walk to our farthest destination, to let him sleep a bit. Well, mister was not too happy about being woken up and smiles were hard to come by. We did our best, trying to find a great spot to hang out in for some relaxed shots but by the time we found it, Colby said that was enough. We got a few more shots at home and all in all, I love how these images capture some true memories for this family on this day. It was so great to see you again F. family, as always!! Keep smiling, Colby. You can’t fool me – I’ve seen how happy you really are. xo

Meet the H family. Mom, Annina, is the amazing talent behind Enchanting Details Events & Design! I have had the pleasure of working with Nina on many occasions to photograph her adorable party tables and I have also photographed her with her family a few times too! This session was a combined headshot for Nina/family session. I always have so much fun chasing these boys around. I honestly think I got more blurry pictures than in focus ones this time around – they are fast little buggers!! And of course I can’t forget their golden retriever, Lucy, who was a very willing participant to get some headshots done!! H. family – enjoy your preview!

Dearest Isabella,

Today is your 7th birthday. I don’t know where the time has gone. ‘Max and Ruby’ and ‘Dora the Explorer’ have been replaced with ‘Dog with a Blog’ and ‘Jessie’. You tell me that you can’t wait until you are in high school and I, in turn, tell you not to grow up too fast. Enjoy being a child and all of the wonder that comes along with it. There is plenty of time to be grown up.

You have a spirit like no other – an old soul, I say. You are an amazingly beautiful, independent young lady. Sometimes it amazes me how much love you have in your heart. You are sensitive and caring towards all things. Your artistic abilities are stunning. Your voice, of angels. We have recently taken to calling you “Edison” because of the beautiful inventions are are always coming up with.

I am so proud of you and all that you accomplish in school and in your personal time. I love that you wanted to carry a pad of paper, colored pencils, and a camera on our most recent nature expedition and how you could look for shells and rocks for hours on end during every trip to the beach. I love that you leave me little notes and videos on my phone that make me cry with laughter upon finding them. I love your creativity – it is a gift.

I think newborn to 6-8 months is the most dramatic change especially if I have not seen them at all between that time. Harrison was one of my newborns. I got to meet him again here at 8 months – both times, he was so much fun to photograph. Here we are for his ‘at-home’ session.

Monday I spent a beautiful afternoon hiking some local trails with my girls, ending with a snack and some rolling around in the fields. Lots of laughter and play. I had no idea how beautiful this innocence would come to be. On my way home, I received a phone call from my husband asking if I had heard about the marathon. I hadn’t and he told me the awful news. News that hit so close to home for me as it did for so many. I have so many fond memories of Marathon Monday from my time as an undergraduate and graduate student at Northeastern University. It was a sign of spring, I remember feeling so carefree and happy. It was a time to spend with friends, to forget about the weight of classes and upcoming final exams. I always yearn to be in Boston on this day - just to take it all in. All that is Boston in the springtime. Sunday night I was trying to decide what to do with the girls on the first of our two days off together. The thought of Boston came into my mind, thankfully, that thought was fleeting as I wasn’t about to take both girls into the city by myself on such a busy day. We opted for a nature walk.

Yesterday was greeted with much sorrow realizing that it wasn’t a bad dream. That this senseless act of violence against the people of the city that I love so much, an act against all Americans, really did happen. I knew that if I stayed home with the girls all day, I would have been tuning into the tv too much to get the most recent updates on the events related to the bombing. I decided that the only place to get away from it all and relax would be by the ocean. We don’t live close to to ocean anymore – it is a good 1+ hours to get there. Yesterday – I needed to be there. I needed to hear the amazement in my girls’ voices when they saw the ocean for the first time this year. I needed to watch them play in the sand and soak up the sun. I needed to watch them roam the beautiful beach, looking for rocks and seashells. I needed to take in the innocence of their childhood. I needed to feel safe. I needed to forget, if only for 3 hours.

My thoughts are with all of those families affected by this senseless tragedy.

As with most photographers, my children are the reason I got back into photography after a long hiatus. I am crazy about capturing everyday moments in our house. The ordinary days and activities become something permanent, not just small, fleeting memories. I love looking through my childhood photo albums and experiencing my early childhood for the first time. Needless to say, my girls are my inspiration in so many ways and they are what I photograph the most.

The month of April is a big deal in our house. Ava turned 3 on the 4th and Isabella will be 7 on the 19th. I am having a hard time with 7 – it just seems so old and it is quite obvious that she is a big kid now. Happy birthday to both of my girls this month. Love you both so much.

I am thrilled to be part of this project. I failed miserably at my attempt on a 365 project (I got to January 4th). I look forward to sharing 10 of my favorite images each month. Some months I may have a theme, and for others, I will simply choose a few favorites I took throughout the month. Here are some recent favorites of our ‘everyday’…

This one was a quick addition this morning. It is often that Ava crawls into our bed around 4am. I watched her for a while and took an iPhone pic but I couldn’t resist hurrying downstairs to grab my camera to get this shot…

At home with the D family | jill serrano photography | boston family photographer

I had the pleasure of taking newborn pictures of this new baby boy..who is now 8 months! Photographing a family that contains 3 young children is never easy but I think we made the best of the situation, played to each child’s needs and wants as best we could, and got some great images! It is always so awesome to see families as they grow. Sometimes I see this transition through Facebook and other social media sites but I have not seen Connor since he was a newborn and I’ll admit, I had to wipe a couple of tears the first time I saw him as he was carried down the stairs from his nap on the morning of our session. It is amazing how fast time goes by and how many changes happen. This is why I love what I do so much – to capture a small piece of time, to make it something permanent.

My Ava Bean,

Today is your third birthday. You came into our lives with as much craziness as you present to our family to this day but I fall more in love with you each day. Most mornings you come crawling into my bed and we snuggle. You lovingly caress my face or arm and it is one of the best parts of my day. As we go through the daily routine, with Tuesdays being my favorite day because I get to spend it with you, you have your usual demands “I want milk” or “I don’t want to wear that shirt”, it is always “I want” despite us constantly reminding you that the best way to get what you want is to say “Can I please have…?” You are learning. Deep inside I love that I am the only one you want kisses from and that I am your snuggle buddy when we settle down after a long day when I can smell your hair and hold you. This is usually the time your beg Daddy to make us popcorn. Your ability to get everything you want is astonishing..those big brown eyes, pleading. All I can do is smile. I smile because I love you more than words could express. You make my heart smile.

Sometimes I worry that you are experiencing an outside world that is not age appropriate. You know every Taylor Swift song better than you know your ABCs. You watch more Harry Potter lately than Sesame Street. You are experiencing a much different childhood than your sister did but you make us laugh with the things you say and do. You are sassy, silly, and crazy but so sweet and loving. I love watching you wanting to be like your big sister. I think you are going to be the best speller in your 1st grade class because you are already practicing how to spell when we quiz Bella for her weekly spelling tests. You love {princesses, wearing 5 bathing suits at one time, dressing up in some crazy outfits, books, baby dolls, and popcorn}. You are amazing and beautiful.

You are my last baby. I am on a mission to leave you with a complete record of your journey through childhood and therefore, I have spent much of your childhood pushing a camera in your face. You recently proved yourself to be quite the budding photographer yourself when I gave you my camera to finish off a roll of film and you took off like you had been using a camera for years. I am experiencing a new childhood through your eyes.

Happy birthday, Bean. You ARE a princess.
